10 Best Federal Government Revenue Sites
The federal government has made great strides in the past decade in clarifying the incredibly complex webs of funding streams emanating out of Washington.
1. The single best site is grants.gov. Managed by the Department of Health and Human Services it is an up-to-date repository of current sources of the fed’s largesse. The site helps you find opportunities and then helps you apply for them. There are many other features that make this a frequent stopover. Government benefits, loans funds and small business opportunities are covered elsewhere.
2. The Federal Register is the daily encyclopedic information source of all things federal government including grants and contracts. It is the official source for rules, proposed rules, and notices of Federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other presidential documents.
3. Go to the Government Printing Office for some navigation and browsing assistance on all federal publications, including the Federal Register.
4. The Commerce Business Daily, now replaced by this site lists over 25,000 opportunities for government contracts, awards and other ways to obtain available government program funds. It includes aspects of the Recovery and Reinvestment Act programs, although a separate site also exists for that particular aspect of government program.
5. The main R&R site is Recovery.gov where there are weekly reports by states and localities on where the Stimulus Package funds are being used. It is now more of a reporting and watchdog site than an opportunity one, with FedBizOpps as the preferred place for obtaining funds. See also @RecoveryDotGov on twitter.
6. The Catalogue of Federal Domestic Assistance is another of the comprehensive sites to search for funding opportunities. The CFDA provides a complete listing of Federal program available to states, local government, Indian tribes, public and private nonprofit organizations, specialized groups and individuals.
7. Don Griesmann, by far the best source of information on grants, recommends this site which he describes this way, “Federal grant notices by agency, a hit-and-miss proposition but absolutely valuable.”
8. Grant Station is a subscription service that organizes international, foundation, federal and other grant opportunities into searchable data, and offers a number of other grant and applications services. They report over 375,000 subscribers.
9. Federal grant notices on specific topics, funding activities, and types of grants can be customized from the grants.gov data base through this.
